Refugee World

Spacecraft approaching Saturn through its rings and moons beneath a gold and teal starfield.

The Moons of Saturn

Humanity’s greatest construction—settlements built to recover minerals needed on Earth. Home to the skilled, the strong, and the brave; lair for the thief, the grifter, and the con.

Refugee World

Sanctuary for the outcasts, the fugitives, and the lost—if they can get there.

The Refugee World novels tell the stories of the people who make their lives there. Across six books, David Hendrix explores a civilization taking shape hundreds of millions of miles from Earth—its settlements and cities, its mysteries and conflicts, and the people caught between the promise of a new world and the realities of living there.

Prospector’s World

Alejandro Detweiler, young and idealistic, anxious to explore the Saturn System, enlists in the Guard. On his first trip in space, his ship is unexpectedly diverted to Janus, the Prospector’s World, to investigate a mysterious death. As the circle of violence spreads, Alejandro struggles to defend the residents of this rebellious community, then his crewmates, and finally, himself. Left on an isolated satellite, he must choose. Face a ruthless mob, or attempt a daunting escape. To complete his mission, perhaps he must do both.

Search for the Deveraux

The Guard ship Custis arrives to retrieve the derelict Anderson from the boulder-strewn emptiness known as Tethys LaGrange Point Four, to discover that the body of a known fatality has vanished from the abandoned craft. The search for the missing crewman expands, and soon ties the fate of the Anderson to that of a ship that vanished twelve years before. Searching for answers, Guardsman Alejandro Detweiler begins an adventure that will lead from Saturn’s Rings to its outermost moons, and take him from the lowest levels of Saturn society to its greatest heights.

A Death in Base One

Guardsman Alejandro Detweiler seeks to put the life of a detective behind him, but crime rushes on. Soon he is called to the aid of the spice merchant’s daughter, and forced to investigate the violent death of a miner, whose body is found practically at his feet. Can Al protect the fair Abrianna? Can he save his friends from a nearly perfect charge of murder? To succeed, he must re-enter the System’s treacherous underworld, a place he hoped to leave behind forever, and confront an enemy whose memory is long.

Facing Exile

A midnight brawl shakes the lower precincts of Base One. The assailants, including miners, members of the Guard, and sundry others, have fled, scattering throughout the settlement’s many levels and squares, regrouping, dispersing again, wandering alone. In the hours that follow, all combatants return to their home quarters. All but one, found dead in a city street. Guardsman Alejandro Detweiler’s new mission is to defend the accused, an unfortunate fellow cadet who bears the victim’s blood on his clothing. Other suspects include Al’s most loyal friend, his newfound girl, and according to police reports, Al himself. One thing is clear: a second trial is needed, and this time, Al will preside.

Pandora’s World

Alejandro Detweiler has achieved every measure of success a young man could claim. If becoming an officer in the Aerospace Guard, among the best of the elite, is not enough, he has also joined hands with Abrianna Wright, the spice merchant’s daughter, both beautiful and wise. Together, they are prepared for any challenge the Saturn System might have. But in the capital city of Base One, the dead sometimes don’t stay buried long. Another murder has shaken the community, with consequences for Al and Abrianna. Soon, they are swept into the investigation, and led finally to the Resident’s Community, the shadowy group of Earthly visitors who rule the System. There, Al and Abrianna enter a maze of corruption and betrayal. What they discover will roil the System’s fragile governance and imperil their own hopes for the future.
